Encore
The real novelty is the introduction of the hatchback model, named Encore. It adopts a body style similar to its French cousin, the "Renault 11". It differs from the latter by its rear lights, Americanized bumpers, and a host of other elements.
It is also built in the United States in the same plant as the Alliance.
The Encore is meant to be a new asset for conquering the American market. However, the Encore will mainly eat into the market share of its sister model, the Alliance.
Engine-wise, nothing changes, though the "System Sentry" (fluid monitoring center) is now offered as an option.
As for the Alliance, it remains unchanged from the 1983 model year.

Special Edition: The Renault Alliance and Encore "DIAMOND EDITION"
A special edition accompanies the launch of the Encore.
This limited edition "DIAMOND Edition" (or "Édition Diamant" in Canada) is offered on Encore models (3 or 5-door) and Alliance models (2 or 4-door).
It comes equipped with a long list of features, a choice between special edition colors « Classic Black Clearcoat » and « Olympic White Clearcoat », as well as exclusive gold decorative graphics. They feature the LS trim for the Encore and DL trim for the Alliance right off the bat, along with specific equipment at a reduced price:
