Renault Alliance 1985

The range expands.

Birth of the Alliance convertible.
September 1984, the "D42" project is launched.
Nothing to do with what was done in France by "LM Sovra" or "Heuliez".
These two manufacturers started from a "Renault 11" base because there was no two-door "Renault 9" as in the United States. The "Heuliez" project never came to fruition, while a few models were produced by "LM Sovra". The latter resembled more a beach pick-up "Renault 11" (LM Sovra being more specialized in buggies) than a true convertible.
This convertible was offered at a price 40% higher than the sedan, but it remained the least expensive convertible on the American market. Convertibles benefited from more standard equipment such as power steering or the luggage rack mounted on the trunk lid, more aesthetic than effective. The electro-hydraulic soft top was also standard, but the four power windows, air conditioning, central locking, and cruise control remained optional.
Engine-wise, the 1.7 L F3N single-point injection engine producing 77.5 hp appeared, delivered as standard on the Alliance convertible and the Encore GS.
On the assembly line, the starting model was an Alliance coupe. Workers cut off the roof. They then installed structural reinforcements in a separate workshop before the convertible rejoined the assembly line.
