1985 Renault Alliance

The lineup expands.

Birth of the Alliance convertible.
September 1984, project "D42" is launched.
It has nothing to do with what was done in France by "LM Sovra" or "Heuliez".
Both of these coachbuilders started from a "Renault 11" base because there was no two-door "Renault 9" as there was in the US. The "Heuliez" project would never see the light of day, whereas a few units were built by "LM Sovra". The latter was closer to a "Renault 11" beach pickup (LM Sovra being specialized in buggies) than a true convertible.
This convertible was offered at a price 40% higher than the sedan, yet it remained the least expensive convertible on the American market. Convertibles came standard with more equipment, such as power steering or a luggage rack mounted on the trunk lid—more decorative than functional. The electro-hydraulic soft top was also standard, but power windows, air conditioning, power central locking, and cruise control remained options.
As for the powertrain, the introduction of the 1.7L F3N single-point fuel-injected engine producing 77.5 hp came standard on the Alliance convertible and the Encore GS.
On the assembly line, the base model started as an Alliance coupe. Workers cut off the roof and installed structural reinforcements in a separate workshop before sending the convertible back onto the main assembly line.
